    AveXis, Inc., a Novartis Company, is a clinical-stage gene therapy company, dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product candidate, AVXS-101, is our proprietary gene therapy product candidate currently in development for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, Type 1, the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, and for the treatment of SMA Type 2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has granted AVXS-101 Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of all types of SMA and Breakthrough Therapy Designation, as well as Fast Track Designation for the treatment of SMA Type 1. In addition to developing AVXS-101 to treat SMA Type 1 and Type 2, we also plan to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome (RTT) and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.


    • Responsible for developing, implementing, and communicating the company’s APAC Medical Affairs strategies/tactics primarily for SMA but also pipeline products as they advance in development, in line with Global Medical Affairs vision and strategies.
    • Responsible for any rapid APAC-centric Medical team and organizational buildout necessary to implement the strategies and tactics.
    • Responsible for establishing the governance structure for Medical Affairs in APAC, in close collaboration with Head of Global Medical Affairs and APAC General Manager.
    • Partners with Clinical Development and Commercial functions in developing and implementing regional medical strategies for appropriate global lifecycle management.
    • Serves as a regional lead for scientific expertise in SMA and maintains in-depth understanding (scientific and clinical) of the disease state, product, competitors, marketplace, related medical areas and regulatory guidelines.
    • Develops the strategy for field Medical activities and Key Opinion Leader (KOL) advocacy plans to build and maintain critical relationships and knowledge management.
    • Oversees the Medical Information function and the Regional Medical Directors (RMDs) - field-based Medical Affairs personnel - to assure that medical information materials are up to date, accurate, balanced and useful to stakeholders.
    • Develops and delivers scientific presentations to internal and external audiences (reimbursement agencies, healthcare professionals, advocacy organizations and consumers as compliant, policy-making bodies, etc.).
    • Oversees and provides medical oversight for presentations conducted by field-based medical personnel.
    • Plans and develops programs and participates in medical congresses, expert meetings and other medical activities.
    • Leads regional publication planning function aligned with the Global publication plan to drive the scientific agenda.
    • Provides Medical oversight for promotional and educational materials working through the regional Promotion Review Committee (PRC) and Medical Review Committee (MRC).
    • Leads the planning and execution of Scientific Advisory Board meetings.
    • Leverages scientific knowledge and KOL relationships to identify opportunities for activities leading to scientific advancement.
    • Sets and implements the strategy for regional investigator-initiated research studies and evaluating and recommending medical/therapeutic concepts aligned with global product development strategy. 
    • Collaborates with internal Patient Advocacy relations to liaise with regional patient and disease state associations and organizations.
    • Provides medical input into Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR), disease models, epidemiological studies, market research, and real-world study proposals.
    • Maintains budget responsibility for all regional medical activities.   


    • MD or equivalent required. 
    • Minimum 10 years of progressive in-country and cross-country experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry in the APAC region, preferably in a similarly situated role in a small or mid-size company.
    • Neurology or neurodegenerative disease experience preferred.
    • Experience or keen understanding and awareness of the cell and gene therapy space preferred.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (Fluency in Mandarin Chinese preferred), including strong formal presentation skills. 
    • Excellent planning and organization skills.
    • Experience working with US-based cross functional teams.
    • Strong interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to effectively manage teams of peers and to work closely with both external physicians/scientists and numerous in-house support groups.
    • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity, represent the company’s high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism. A genuine care for patients and their families.
    • Must have a roll-up-your sleeves mentality and a passion for getting things done, as well as the ability to learn quickly.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain scientific credibility while being commercially supportive, and to communicate scientific results and effectively respond to data queries from customers and/or consultants.
    • High proficiency in problem solving ability and strong scientific analytical skills.
    • Willingness/Ability to travel up to 50-60% and internationally at times is required.


    The level of this position will be based on the final candidate’s qualifications.
