    AveXis, Inc., a Novartis Company, is a clinical-stage gene therapy company, dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product candidate, AVXS-101, is our proprietary gene therapy product candidate currently in development for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, Type 1, the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, and for the treatment of SMA Type 2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has granted AVXS-101 Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of all types of SMA and Breakthrough Therapy Designation, as well as Fast Track Designation for the treatment of SMA Type 1. In addition to developing AVXS-101 to treat SMA Type 1 and Type 2, we also plan to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome (RTT) and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

     

    In this high-profile role the Senior Director, Field Medical will lead a diverse team of highly trained, field based, Regional Medical Directors. The Senior Director will be responsible for providing strategic direction to and managing the performance of the team in line with corporate and regulatory guidelines. In addition, this individual will be responsible for leading cross-functional projects and contributing to the overall success of the Medical Affairs organization.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage and develop field team members within the region including hiring, training, mentoring, performance management and career development.
    • Position the RMD team to achieve long term sustainable results and demonstrate functional excellence.
    • Responsible for the execution of all efforts, initiatives and activities and ensures that all interactions and activities of the field team support the overall MA strategy and adhere to corporate and regulatory compliance standards.
    • Interpret and translate national strategies into regional plans and provide strategic guidance to the team in the development and execution of KOL engagement and territory management plans.
    • Provides ongoing feedback to internal teams to ensure clear understanding of field clinical insights and incorporation into key strategic decisions.
    • Build trust and strong communication across the team to ensure optional performance and output.
    • Demonstrate clinical, scientific, and technical expertise and serve as a resource for the RMD team as well as internal and external stakeholders.
    • Build and cultivate productive relationships with cross-functional partners, work collaboratively, and establish oneself as a valued team member with internal partners.
    • Enhance organizational collaboration by encouraging dialog amongst team members to address issues, seek change and solutions that improve the organization.
    • Identify, recommend, and develop projects aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the RMD team ensuring operational excellence.
    • Effectively manage administrative activities of self and team members:  Includes budget, database entry, continual compliance of all procedural requirements of the role, and appropriate utilization and best practice sharing.

    Qualifications

    • PhD, PharmD., or MD required.
    • Minimum of 3 years of MSL management experience preferred including minimum 5 years of MSL experience (Neurodegenerative disease and/or pediatric specialty preferred).
    • HEOR/Managed Care Experience (highly preferred).
    • Extensive understanding of clinical, commercial and regulatory standards and issues that affect the pharmaceutical industry and managed care landscapeHighly perceptive and demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Experience working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders.
    • Strong team player that has a customer service approach and is solution oriented.
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, work cross-functionally, and lead teams.
    • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and integrity, represent the company’s high ethics, moral behavior, and professionalism.
    • Strong computer skills with demonstrated experience in working with the Microsoft suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
    • Willingness/Ability to travel up to 75% at times is required.

     

    The level of this position will be based on the final candidate’s qualifications.
