    AveXis, Inc. is a clinical-stage gene therapy company, dedicated to developing and commercializing novel treatments for patients suffering from rare and life-threatening neurological genetic diseases. Our initial product candidate, AVXS-101, is our proprietary gene therapy product candidate currently in development for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, Type 1, the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, and for the treatment of SMA Type 2. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has granted AVXS-101 Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of all types of SMA and Breakthrough Therapy Designation, as well as Fast Track Designation for the treatment of SMA Type 1. In addition to developing AVXS-101 to treat SMA Type 1 and Type 2, we also plan to develop other novel treatments for rare neurological diseases, including Rett syndrome (RTT) and a genetic form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) caused by mutations in the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene.

     

    The Director of Government Affairs will report to the Vice President, Patient Advocacy & Professional Relations and will be a key member of the AveXis team.  The successful candidate will be dedicated to support the successful launch of a near term product candidate. He/She will work collaboratively with other key functions to ensure a successful launch of our gene replacement therapy candidate. 

     

    The Director of Government Affairs will serve as the face of, and point of contact for the AveXis for federal and state government affairs. He/she will advocate for AveXis on public policy issues, promotes and protects the interests, monitors proposed legislation and regulations to evaluate its impact, supports market access with state Medicaid issues, and manages lobbying activities. 

    Responsibilities

    • Oversee and direct the company’s proactive government affairs program 
    • Promote a positive presence for AveXis amongst key stakeholders focused on the Government and relevant institutional bodies to shape the policy environment relevant for AveXis’ gene therapy
    • Develop and implement a GA strategy to position AveXis as a leader in gene replacement therapy and to enhance and support timely access to AveXis’ future potential pipeline therapies
    • Support state adoption of SMA newborn screening through Cure SMA’s Newborn Screening Coalition
    • Work collaboratively with the Market Access team and other departments to ensure strategic alignment and well-informed decision-making
    • Help AveXis identify opportunities to work with the policy makers to advance its mission
    • Monitor the policy environment (both at national and state level) with the objective of providing information and insights on dealing with developments in the business environment
    • When relevant, recruit and supervise consultants who will support the delivery of our activities. Manage these relationships to ensure effective delivery of projects to time and budget
    • Research and monitor legislative activities, regulatory activities, and help develop the company’s position
    • Analyze proposed legislative actions and determine the impact on the organization 
    • Drive planning and drafting of white papers and presentation materials produced by company for use locally – lead, oversee and prepare literature (hand-out materials) used for government relations 
    • Represent company, as required, at trade groups, provider organizations, and advocacy groups on government affairs related activities

     

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required.
    • Knowledge of pharmaceutical industry and related public policy issues is required.
    • A minimum of seven plus (7+) years’ experience in government relations.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex and changing legislation, regulations, and the impact to AveXis. Influencing and persuasion skills to successfully advocate our positions externally.
    • Analytical skills to understand key components of legislation and the potential effect on BI and the industry.
    • This position requires advanced knowledge of Medicaid, state government affairs, and public policy.
    • Experience lobbying elected officials and staff in state government.
    • Experience identifying legislative issues and assessing impact on pharmaceutical industry.
    • Requires advanced communication skills, influencing skills, business acumen, and ability to provide strategic advice to colleagues.
    • Experience with projects supporting business objectives.
    • Travel ~50%

    The level of this position will be based on the final candidate’s qualifications.
