This position is responsible for managing AveXis’s plant safety programs to ensure a safe working environment and minimize the risk for accidents. The role will implement safety programs to provide the road map to zero injuries and world class performance, plan and/or deliver programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, and promote plant safety by working with all departments to analyze current situation and recommend safety improvements. The position will also analyze accident data to identify trends and accident types that can be prevented, work with contractors on equipment installations and modifications and represent the site at external safety events, and audits.  This person must maintain OSHA required records and reports, coordinate compliance driven safety such as annual audiograms, industrial hygiene surveys, respirator fit testing, CPR/First Aid, etc., handles and defends any OSHA complaints, audits etc., and manages Worker's Compensation. This position will also be responsible for presenting monthly safety metrics as part of Quality Management Review.

 

Manage and continuously improve Health and Safety Programs in adherence to all Federal, State and Local requirements and AveXis policies, strategies, initiatives and goals. Health and Safety Programs managed by this position may include, but are not limited to: Industrial Hygiene, NFPA 101: Life Safety Code, Fire Prevention, Emergency Evacuation, Property Conservation, Ergonomics (Lifting Safety, Warehouse Safety), Hazard Communication, and other General Safety Programs including but not limited to Hot Work, Control of Hazardous Energy, Compressed Gas Safety, Electrical Hazard Safety, Lock-Out Tag-Out, Ladder Safety, Confined Space, Facilities PPE and Respiratory Protection.

Manage and implement programs to foster a culture of safety and environmental stewardship within our business units. Duties may include performing safety workplace assessments; partnering with managers, supervisors, and employees to minimize occupational health and safety risks; teaching specific safe work habits and driving a behavior based safety program.

Assist with the development, improvement, and management of EHS Management Systems for the Libertyville site. Develop and implement continuous improvement concepts to better the site's safety and environmental performance.

Responsibilities

  • Miscellaneous EHS duties as required, including but not limited to:

    • EHS training
    • Perform job safety analyses/risk assessments
    • Participating on emergency response teams such as Emergency Evacuation Team.
    • Responding to incidents
    • Lead and participate in inspections and audits
    • Other tasks as required
  • Implement, execute, and ensure compliance with AveXis's Environmental, Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead execution of the site's annual EHS Plan, including development of expense and capital budgets needed to support these efforts.
  • Build capability of site resources to support implementation of EHS programming.
  • Manage site-wide system, Program Element (PE) process, to identify and evaluate hazards (risks), and implement effective controls (corrective solutions).
  • Lead incident investigation process, including root cause analysis and identification of corrective action plans.
  • Interface with regulatory bodies (OSHA, EPA, State/Local Regulators) Facilitate the completion of a site-wide annual HSE training plan.
  • Participate in formal EHS reviews of existing equipment modifications, new equipment purchases, and changes in site processes.
  • Ensure that required regulatory permits are acquired, that reports are submitted to regulatory agencies, and any site permit conditions (e.g. sampling, record-keeping) are met.
  • Achieve annual targets for incident frequency, severity and related cost reductions.

Qualifications

  • Education and Certifications:

    • Degree in Occupational EHS discipline is required, Science or Engineering preferred
    • Professional EHS certification or the desire to attain certification (CIH, CSP, CHMM, and / or PE) is strongly preferred


    Work Experience:

    • 8+ years of Environmental, Health & Safety (HSE, EHS) experience in a manufacturing environment required
    • Functional EHS Knowledge in regulatory requirements, EHS technical aspects (safety, industrial hygiene, environmental), risk management, behavior-based safety, training, auditing / program review, regulatory agency enforcement, EHS vendor / consultant management, business knowledge required
    • Proven track record in driving cultural change in EHS

    Skills & Capabilities:

    • Strong communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and influence management skills
    • Incumbent must be able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks without losing momentum .
    • Influence a philosophy of strategic safety training and ensure the Worker's Compensation Claim Management program is administered in an effective and compliant manner.
    • Provide business consultation to plant leadership team regarding the social system of the plant operations.
    • Cultivate employee commitment to a high performance culture.
    • Actively participate in Plant Safety Audits

    This level of this role will be determined based on the candidate’s experience
